Rent A Grubcan
Thank you for your interest in renting a Grubcan. We rent the 4.5L and 6.6L Carbon/Kevlar canisters.
The cost is $7/ day, only for the days you are on the trail.
Shipping to you is a $15 flat rate, per canister, in the contiguous US. You pay for return shipping. (If you want to ship to Canada we are happy to provide you a quote for the cost depending on where in Canada you are.)
If you’re requesting the container within a week of the date you need it, we will need to charge for express shipping – cost varies – to assure that the canister gets to you on time. There is a 2-3 business day processing time to put your rental in the mail.
Grubcans are approved at all National Parks across the United States except Yosemite and SEKI. This has nothing to do with its efficacy and everything to do with the approval process being closed since 2015 (before Grubcan was even a company). You can read more here.
Note: We only rent Carbon/Kevlar Grubcans, we do not rent the polycarbonate Spirit Wave 7.2L.

Common Questions About the Canisters
How much can the rental Grubcans hold?
It depends on how you pack your food and toiletries. Using the repacking method, the 6.6L canisters can hold up to 6 nights worth of food and the 4.5L can hold up to 4 nights of food. If you don’t repackage your food and toiletries (or if you just carry a lot of stuff!), the canisters won’t hold quite that much.
It is your responsibility to understand how much you can fit in 6.6 liters or 4.5 liters of space. We do not issue refunds after rental canisters have been sent. If you have questions, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]!
How do I use a bear canister?
Renting is a great choice when you’re getting into backpacking, but we know it also might be the first time you use a bear canister.
This information on Grand Teton National Park’s site is a quick read that covers the essentials. Visit our Bear Safety page for resources about staying safe in bear country!
Gift a Rental
Gifting a rental can be a great way to support someone going on an important trip, help a new backpacker who doesn’t have a bear can yet, or let someone try out a Grubcan!
To gift a rental, email [email protected]. We’ll need to know:
- Name and email address of the recipient
- The number of days you’d like to gift. This will be how many trail days the recipient gets (as we just charge for days on the trail)
- If you already know the dates the recipient will need the Grubcan, please tell us and we can put them on the calendar. If you don’t know, that’s okay! The recipient can schedule it themselves, it will just be based on availability. The recipient can use the trail days all at once or use them on multiple trips.
We’ll send you a secure payment link to pay for the rental days and a flat, one-way $15.00 shipping charge, then after the payment is processed we can either email the recipient directly or provide you with a printable gift certificate.
Wow, these were great!!!! Rented 3 of these for 6 day 5 night backpacking in Colorado. First, super light weight. Second, easily fit 6 days of food for 1 person (repack method) in each. Third, great locking mechanism. Finally…easy fit sideways or vertical in pack. Also fits easily under top brain of pack. Everyone in our party used Granite Gear Crown series packs.
THE BEST CANISTER IS THE ONE YOU CANT TELL IS IN YOUR PACK!!!!
